The initiative that will be discussed reflects the local contribution and role to support the global climate change actions by protecting and restoring the critical peatland and forest whilst in the same time preparing the potential source for alternative energy.
The specific initiative is to utilize the land of Forest Area with Specific Purpose for education managed by Tanjungpura University as location for forest restoration effort by utilizing Kemiri sunan (Reutealis trisperma (Blanco) Airy Shaw) species. As the specific tree species is believed to be beneficial for reducing global warming as well to support the development of biodiesel, which will help to decrease the dependency to the fossil fuels. The potential for the scale up and/or replication of this initiative and specifically in a manner that can contribute to the community empowerment in a larger scale will be discussed.
