Indonesia lies in the geographic region that is highly vulnerable to the impact of climate change. Since 2007, the day of the meeting in Bali, Indonesia, climate change has become one focus of Indonesia. We are determined to contribute climate solutions, both for the global’s shake, and especially our own people. For approximately eight years, the country is trying to ratify the treaty that became committed to minimizing climate change.
We do understand that Indonesia set in 10th biggest emitter in the world. Therefore as the efforts we conduct the social forestry where we allocate 12,7 billion hectares of land to be managed by people. It is our effort to maintain forest cover and reduce carbon emissions. Indonesia also have elaborated Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) into the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) mainly related to the target of Indonesia’s contribution to emissions reductions by 2030. Indonesia targets to reduce emissions below business as usual by 2030 by 29 percent and 41 percent with international assistance.
As has been mandated by President Jokowi at COP 21 UNFCCC in Paris, in December 2015 stated that the Agreement Paris should reflect the balance, fairness and in accordance with the priorities and national capacity, so need to be binding, dimensional long-term, ambitious but not hamper the development of developing countries.
The challenging things for a developing economic countries are balancing between economic growth and environmental sustainability, the two pillars that are inextricably linked. When poorly managed, achieving economic development could compromise environmental sustainability, but without the economic development, poverty is also harmful for the environment, including the climate change.
For that Indonesia decided to ratify this agreement along with so many countries and committed to communicating the efforts to suppress the temperature of the earth committed by Indonesian and show progress over time in terms of mitigation, adaptation to climate change.
