Indonesia is making considerable progress in addressing climate change, with the objective of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 or earlier. The transition to a low-carbon economy presents opportunities for growth, innovation, and leadership; however, it also raises critical questions about equity and inclusiveness, particularly in sectors with high carbon intensity, such as the shipping industry and energy production.
A crucial element of this transition is the assurance of a Just Transition, a framework that places equal emphasis on environmental sustainability and the equitable treatment of workers, communities, and industries that will be affected by the transition. Indonesia’s approach is informed by both domestic and international frameworks, including the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), a multi-stakeholder initiative that provides support to countries in the transition to clean energy, with the objective of minimizing social and economic disruptions.
The shipping industry, which plays a vital role in Indonesia’s economy, must also undergo decarbonization. The development of green ports is a crucial part of this transformation.
This session will focus on Indonesia’s actions to ensure a just and equitable transition, particularly in sectors like shipping and energy. It will highlight policy frameworks, partnerships, and practical steps being taken to support workers and communities while promoting sustainable development.
