A2 – Energy Transition: Innovations, Sustainability Approaches, Strategic Efforts and Initiatives to achieve Indonesia’s Climate Goals

About

A. Abstract

In September 2022, Indonesia set ambitious Enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions (ENDC) targets, aiming for a 32% unconditional and a 43% conditional reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions below 2030 business-as-usual (BAU) levels. Central to these efforts is the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) Net-Zero Emissions (NZE) Energy Roadmap 2060, which targets an annual reduction of 34.2 million tons of CO2 equivalent from 2020 to 2030, reflecting Indonesia’s proactive stance on climate action.

Implementing energy efficiency measures is crucial for promoting energy savings and reducing emissions. Projects related to energy efficiency are reported to the SINERGI online system, in compliance with Government Regulation No. 33/2023 on energy conservation, ensuring transparency and alignment with national policies. The ultimate goal is to foster the creation of a carbon trading market, which will be integrated into the Indonesian carbon exchange, thereby encouraging further emission reductions and enhancing economic opportunities in the carbon market.

Geothermal power has been a key component of Indonesia’s clean energy sector for decades. The country’s abundant liquid-dominated geothermal systems generate significant amounts of energy-rich brine, often considered waste. However, this brine holds untapped potential for power generation. One efficient method to harness this energy is through a Bottoming Unit scheme with a Binary Geothermal Power Plant system. This setup uses the brine’s heat to vaporize a secondary fluid with a low boiling point, which then drives a turbine to produce electricity. This approach not only boosts energy efficiency but also supports Indonesia’s sustainable energy goals.

Moreover, waste brine can be used to process local agricultural products, adding societal value. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs, like those by Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE), successfully utilize brine for mushroom cultivation, palm sugar processing, and coffee bean drying. Additionally, geothermal power plays a vital role in green hydrogen production, which involves using electrolysis to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, 2 Usulan TOR Sesi Talkshow Pavilion Indonesia COP 29 – Ditjen EBTKE, Kementerian ESDM providing a clean and sustainable energy solution. PGE is a leading company in optimizing geothermal energy to achieve net-zero emission targets.

Being the state-owned electricity provider in Indonesia, PLN (Persero) as well as its subsidiaries are also actively advancing their commitment in reducing GHG emission through innovative projects. By implementing these measures, those companies aim to not only obtain economic benefits from electricity market, but also improving the value from carbon through the issuance of Emission Reduction Certificates (SPE-GRK).

As an archipelagic country, Indonesia is facing the challenges of rural electrification, especially in regions that are difficult to be reached by PT PLN. Off grid power plants development naturally becomes a solution, in which international organization partners such as UNDP playing important roles in supporting the Government’s program of providing people the access to a reliable electricity. Such partnerships allow the people to gain access to a better economy as their productivity could be increased.

B. Goals

The talk show aims to enhance understanding and support clean energy development to achieve Indonesia’s climate goals while promoting sustainable economic development.

By showcasing innovative technologies, strategic approaches, encouraging collaboration, and fostering social acceptance, the talk show seeks to position renewable energy and energy efficiency as a crucial driver in the national transition toward clean energy future.

C. Expected Audience

The talk show will target energy business entities, energy planners, academics, government officials, financial institutions, experts on renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, including geothermal direct-use technology, environmentalists, technology providers, and energy investors.

D. Talk Show Method

Presentations will be made on screen for 10 minutes each, guided by a moderator, followed by a 20-minutes Q&A session.
