As the global aviation industry faces increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions, the search for sustainable alternatives to conventional jet fuel has intensified. Indonesia, with its vast resources and commitment to renewable energy, is exploring innovative pathways to contribute to this global effort. One promising area is the conversion of Used Cooking Oil (UCO) into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). UCO, a waste product that is often underutilized, holds significant potential as a feedstock for SAF, offering a dual benefit of reducing waste and lowering greenhouse gas emissions from aviation.
This talkshow session aims to explore the challenges, opportunities, and strategic actions necessary to accelerate the development of UCO-based SAF in Indonesia. By fostering dialogue among key stakeholders—including government officials, industry leaders, and environmental experts—the session seeks to build a collaborative roadmap for advancing Indonesia’s renewable energy ambitions, particularly in the aviation sector. The discussion will focus on the technical feasibility, regulatory frameworks, and economic viability of scaling up UCO as a sustainable fuel source.
Reference:
The expected outcome of this talk show is to enhance the understanding of UCO’s potential as a key contributor to Indonesia’s renewable energy strategy, with a specific focus on its application in aviation. Through comprehensive discussions, participants will identify the critical steps needed to develop a robust supply chain for UCO collection, processing, and conversion into SAF.
Key outputs from the talk show will include:
This talk show is designed to engage policymakers involved in renewable energy and environmental regulation, representatives from the aviation and biofuel industries, and experts in waste management. Additionally, the session will be relevant for academics and researchers focused on sustainable energy solutions, as well as non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and international agencies committed to climate action and sustainable development. Investors and financial institutions interested in supporting green energy projects are also encouraged to participate.
The session will be conducted as a talk show featuring presentations by three experts followed by a moderated discussion. The session will last for 80 minutes, with 60 minutes dedicated to presentations and 20 minutes for the discussion.
