A7 – Super Grid and Smart Grid: Connecting the Dots, Embracing Intermittency

About

A. Introduction

Super-grids, or interconnected transmission networks, are crucial for integrating large-scale renewable energy sources like hydropower and geothermal, often located far from urban centers. They facilitate the transfer of clean energy from areas with abundant resources to regions with high demand, balancing supply and demand on a large scale. By improving grid reliability and creating multiple electricity flow pathways, super-grids help manage the variability of renewable energy and reduce the impact of local outages.

As renewable energy becomes more widespread and variable, traditional grid systems face challenges in accommodating this new energy mix. Super-grids and smart grids offer solutions to these challenges, ensuring a more resilient and sustainable energy system.

B. PLN’s Role in Indonesia's Energy Transition

PLN, Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company, is at the forefront of the country’s energy transition. In the talk show, PLN will showcase its strategy to increase renewable energy capacity through super-grid and smart grid initiatives. These efforts are key to connecting Indonesia’s renewable energy sources to demand centers, supporting sustainable economic growth, and accelerating the nation’s energy transition.

C. Global Role of Grids in Decarbonization

The talk show will bring together stakeholders to discuss the importance of enhancing grid capacity to meet global decarbonization goals. Presentations from diverse participants will foster knowledge sharing and collaboration, inspiring new solutions for grid operations and energy transitions worldwide. This platform will help identify opportunities for partnerships, pushing forward collective efforts towards climate goals.

D. Addressing Challenges and Enabling Support

The transition to a low-carbon economy comes with challenges, including technological, financial, and policy hurdles. During the talk show, participants will share their experiences in overcoming these obstacles, offering practical solutions and lessons learned. Governments, financial institutions, and NGOs all have a role to play in supporting this transition—whether by creating enabling policies, providing funding, or promoting community engagement. Collaboration among these sectors is vital to achieving Indonesia’s Net Zero Emissions goals and a sustainable future.

E. Talk Show Format

The talk show will adopt an engaging format, featuring speakers’ presentations and commitments. Distinguished leaders from various fields will share their insights and experiences in the importance of grid operations in multiplying renewable energy capacity.
