Since signing the Paris Agreement in 2015 (COP21), Indonesia has begun to prepare a Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) document as an official statement for its emission reduction commitments. Indonesia’s first NDC was submitted to the UNFCCC in 2016. In COP26 in Glasgow in 2021, Indonesia strengthened its commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by updating its NDC pledge to reduce GHG emission by 29 percent (unconditional) and by 41 percent (conditional on international support) by 2030. In the updated NDC, Indonesia is targeting to reach a net carbon sink in the forestry and land use (FOLU) sector by 2030.
Furthermore, Indonesia has determined that the FOLU sector can significantly contribute to the 41 percent of carbon emission reduction target, with international support (Source: Updated Indonesian NDC, corrected version 2021).
The Indonesian President is one of signatories of the Glasgow’s Leaders’ Declaration on Forests and Land Use. One of the commitments is to strengthen shared efforts to reduce vulnerability, build resilience and enhance rural livelihoods, including through empowering communities, the developing of profitable, sustainable agriculture, and recognition of the multiple values of forests, while recognizing the rights of Indigenous Peoples, as well as local communities, by relevant national legislation and international instruments, as appropriate.
