C1 – Green World, Intergenerational Climate Action

About

A. Background

Climate action refers to a broad set of initiatives, policies, and measures aimed at addressing climate change and its impacts. Emission reduction is one of the central strategies within the broader framework of climate action, involving the process of cutting down the release of greenhouse gasses (GHGs) into the atmosphere, particularly carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. These gasses are the primary contributors to global warming and climate change. Reducing emissions is crucial to mitigating the adverse effects of climate change, such as rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and loss of biodiversity. To achieve significant emission reductions, it is essential to involve diverse actors from different generations and sectors of society.

Engaging intergenerational actors in climate action is vital because climate change impacts everyone, regardless of age, and the younger generation will inherit the long-term consequences of our actions today. Younger people often bring fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and a sense of urgency to the climate conversation. Meanwhile, older generations offer valuable experience, historical context, and established networks. By working together, these groups can combine their strengths, ensuring a more comprehensive and effective approach to tackling climate change.

Multi-stakeholder actions are also crucial for successful climate action. Climate change is a complex and multifaceted issue that requires collaboration across various sectors, including government, private industry, non-governmental organizations, academia, and civil society. Each stakeholder group has unique expertise, resources, and influence that can contribute to the development and implementation of effective climate strategies. Governments can enact policies and regulations, businesses can innovate and invest in sustainable practices, NGOs can advocate and raise awareness, and academia can provide research and data to inform decisions. By fostering cooperation among these diverse groups, we can create robust and sustainable solutions to reduce emissions.

Indonesia, with its diverse population and dynamic socio-economic landscape, presents unique opportunities and challenges in the pursuit of emission reduction. Through intergenerational and multi- stakeholder engagement, Indonesia can leverage the strengths of its people and institutions to drive meaningful change.

The Climate Reality Project Indonesia proposes to organize a talk show at COP29 UNFCCC titled “Green World, Intergenerational Climate Action.” This event will serve as a platform for exchanging knowledge, sharing best practices, and discussing innovative solutions involving various age groups and stakeholders and highlight the importance of collective action in addressing the climate crisis. It aims to cover a range of topics, including the role of youth in climate action, successful multi-stakeholder initiatives, policy and regulatory frameworks for emission reduction, innovative technologies and practices, and the socio- economic benefits of reducing emissions.
