Indonesia is home of the biggest tropical peatland ecosystem in the world, with total area of 24.6 million hectares and store of 46 giga ton CO2 equivalent or about 8 – 14 percent peatland carbon in the world. Government of Indonesia has strong commitment and achieved high performance on peatland protection and management.
Up to 2023, Indonesia, at national level, has also achieved the peatland ecosystem restoration at about 3,9 million hectares in concession area and 50.000 thousand hectares, through the engagement of all related stakeholders among others central and local government, concession holders. The achievement has also been counted as part of Indonesia National Designated Contribution (NDC) for Green House Gas Emission Reduction.
Peatland Ecosystem Restoration is conducted both in concession areas and in non-concession areas (communities). The principle of Peat Ecosystem restoration is known as the 3Rs, namely Rewetting, Revegetation and Revitalization, improving the livelihoods of local communities. Activities carried out are improving water management by building peatland wetting infrastructure, rehabilitating vegetation and improving the community’s economy.
The private sector is obliged to restore its business area and carry out social and environmental responsibilities in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. Starting in the year 2023 Indonesia implement PROPER for evaluating industrial performance in peatland ecosystem degradation control.
In the restoration of peat ecosystems on community lands, the active role of the community in or around the peat ecosystem is needed to maintain the function of the peat ecosystem. The most effective platform to optimize community and stakeholder participation is through an institutional model. Indonesia has developed the Self-Sustaining Peat Maintaining Village (Desa Mandiri Peduli Gambut – DMPG) program, which is a model to encourage and increase community participation in the protection and management of peat ecosystems, with the ultimate goal of preserving the function of peat ecosystems including the prevention of forest fires and community welfare. Community participation through DMPG starts from the planning, implementation, utilization, maintenance, development, monitoring and evaluation stages.
All of the activities have beneficiary in accelerating the Indonesian target for reducing GHG from peatland therefore we conduct the talk show entitled of Collaborative Approaches for Climate Resilience and Carbon Sequestration” in the Pavilion of Indonesia. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry, through the Directorate General Pollution and Environmental Degradation Control will share some strategies and experiences in reducing GHG Indonesia especially related with peatland management.
Sharing experiences on the involvement of stake holders in the implementation of peatland ecosystem protection and management to reduce GHG emissions.
UNFCCC-COP 29 Delegate from various countries, especially with peatland ecosystem, experts, etc., that may take lesson from Indonesia experience and give feedbacks for enhancement.
Talkshow with an efective presentation or video. Every speakers only has 7 minutes and 3-4 concise slides.
