C3 – From ASEAN to the World: Winning the Climate Race with Collaboration in Methane Abatement

About

A. Background

Methane is the second most significant greenhouse gas (GHG) contributor to global warming, accounting for around 20% of global GHG emissions. Methane has been the second largest contributor to GHG emissions from ASEAN’s energy sector through the 2020s. Total GHG emissions from ASEAN’s energy sector were approximately 1,815 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e) in 2020, with methane accounting for 15.2% of this total. If current business practices continue as usual, methane emissions are projected to continue rising until 2050, with total GHG emissions reaching approximately 6,700 MtCO2e and methane emissions reaching around 1,100 MtCO2e. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that prevention of more than 70% of current emissions from oil and gas (O&G) operations is technically feasible and around 45% could be avoided at no net cost because the value of the captured gas is higher than the cost of the abatement measure.

B. Objective

The objective of this talk show is to facilitate a high-level dialogue on the challenges and opportunities for reducing methane emissions within the oil and gas sector, with a specific focus on emerging economies and benchmarking with developed country such as U.S. By bringing together key stakeholders, including government representatives, industry leaders, and international organizations, the session aims to highlight the critical role of methane reduction in achieving regional and global climate targets. The discussion will explore innovative strategies and policies that can be implemented to mitigate methane emissions, emphasizing the importance of collaboration, technological advancements, and policy interventions. The ultimate goal is to identify actionable insights that can guide future initiatives, ensuring that the oil and gas sector contributes effectively to the global effort in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

C. Target and Audiences

The show is intended for global policy makers, Oil and Gas CEO/Sustainability Directors, Environmental NGOs and advocacy groups focused on climate change, International organizations and development agencies, Researchers and academics (specializing in environmental science and energy policy), and Media representatives.

D. Session format

The session will be delivered in a talkshow format featuring presentations, panel discussions, and followed-up by Q&A session with the audience. The session will be opened with a presentation from representative from MoEF Indonesia. Other speakers will be given 10 minutes each. Detailed session format as follow: -Opening: 3 minutes -Keynote speaker: 7 minutes -Speaker 1: 10 minutes -Speaker 2: 10 minutes -Panel discussion: 10 minutes -Q&A session: 5 minutes -Closing statement: 3 minutes -Wrap up: 2 minutes
