A. Background

The Twenty-Ninth Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which was taken place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11th to 22nd November 2024. The main theme of the conference was “In Solidarity for a Green World” , with focus on synegizing the multi-stakeholders collaboration in adapting and mitigating the climate change. Various Key Agenda Items were discussed, as follows: 

  1. Global Stocktake, which concerned as global stocktake further development since the Paris Agreement, assessing progress towards its goals and identifying areas for enhanced action.
  2. Mitigation, which mainly discussed about strengthening national climate action plans (NDCs) and accelerating the transition to low-carbon economies.
  3. Adaptation, which put forward the need for increased support for adaptation measures to build resilience to climate impacts, particularly in vulnerable countries.
  4. Finance, which expected the developing countries to fulfill their commitment to mobilize $100 billion per year in climate finance and discuss long-term climate finance goals.
  5. Loss and Damage, which mainly discussed the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage as well as operationalized funding arrangements and addressed the impacts of climate change on vulnerable communities.
  6. Technology Transfer, which promoted technology transfer and capacity-building to support climate action in developing countries.

During the COP29 UNFCCC, several topics were also discussed the role of nature-based solutions, the transition to the low-carbon economy, and the improvement of the climate education and public awareness. 

Indonesia, as one of the world’s largest tropical rainforest countries, plays a crucial role in global climate change mitigation. Its vast forests act as significant carbon sinks, absorbing large amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Indonesia has recognized the importance of its forests in combating climate change and has implemented various initiatives to protect and restore them. These include reforestation programs, sustainable forest management practices, and efforts to reduce deforestation and peatland degradation. By taking decisive action to safeguard its forests, Indonesia can contribute significantly to global climate goals and ensure a sustainable future for its people and the planet.

The Indonesia pavilion at the COP29 UNFCCC offers a range of activities, such as panel discussions, networking events, art and culture performances to connect with international stakeholders and showcase Indonesia’s climate initiatives. 

B. Objective and Output

The Indonesia Pavilion at COP29 UNFCCC, aligned with the global theme “In Solidarity for a Green World,” highlights “Sustainability Stronger Together.” Rather than just discussing climate issues, it focuses on practical and equitable solutions. By collaborating with global partners, the pavilion aims to achieve significant progress in addressing climate change. The objectives of the Indonesia Pavilion at the COP29 UNFCCC conference are consistent with its overarching theme:

  1. Conducting a public relations campaign to highlight Indonesia’s climate initiatives and innovative approaches on a global stage, contributing to efforts to keep global warming below 2 degrees Celsius.
  2. Providing a platform for the Indonesian government and its partners to present climate mitigation programs, encouraging open and inclusive dialogues that align with global climate action.
  3. Creating opportunities for all interested stakeholders to share ideas and build networks, with the goal of strengthening climate mitigation efforts in Indonesia.

C. Venue, Date, and Time

The Closing Ceremony of the Indonesia Pavilion at the COP29 UNFCCC will be held in Blue Zone CP1-G4, Baku Olympic Stadium, Baku, Azerbaijan on Thursday, 21st November 2024 from 03.30 – 04.50 PM Azerbaijan Standard Time (UTC+4).

D. Participants

The Closing Ceremony of the Indonesia Pavilion at COP29 UNFCCC is intended for individuals and organizations directly involved in climate action, including government agencies, academic institutions, NGOs, international development organizations, researchers, businesses, associations, and civil society groups. These participants will be gathered at the Baku Olympic Stadium in Baku, Azerbaijan.
