Session > Opening Ceremony
Overview
The Indonesia Pavilion at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, officially opened with a powerful call to move from climate ambition to concrete implementation. Led by H.E. Hashim Djojohadikusumo, Special Envoy of the President for Energy and Climate Change, and H.E. Dr. Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, Minister of Environment, the ceremony underscored Indonesia's readiness to lead global climate action. Under the theme "Accelerating Substantial Actions of Net Zero Achievements through Indonesia High Integrity Carbon," the event highlighted a major shift in national policy—moving towards absolute emission targets—and introduced a groundbreaking marketplace for verified carbon credits.
Key Highlights
Indonesia announced a significant upgrade in its climate strategy through its Second Nationally Determined Contribution (SNDC). Moving away from percentage-based reductions, the country has adopted absolute emission targets, capping emissions at 1.258 Gt CO2e (low scenario) to 1.489 Gt CO2e (high scenario) by 2035. This transition offers greater transparency, clarity, and certainty for the global community, proving that Indonesia's climate goals are becoming more rigorous and measurable.
The opening session celebrated the enactment of Presidential Regulation No. 110 of 2025. This new regulation modernizes Indonesia's climate governance by establishing a solid legal foundation for carbon pricing and trading. It ensures that every ton of carbon traded is traceable, transparent, and accountable, aligning Indonesia's domestic market with high-integrity international standards.
For the first time, the Indonesia Pavilion is not just a showcase but a transactional hub. The government launched the " Carbon Connection for Climate Action : Seller Meets Buyer " platform, a pioneering initiative designed to bridge the gap between verified carbon project developers and international buyers.
Hashim Djojohadikusumo emphasized that the Pavilion serves as a crucial instrument of "soft diplomacy" that complements formal negotiations. It is a space where governments, businesses, and civil society collaborate to turn visions into reality. He reiterated that Indonesia is open for global collaboration, guided by principles of equity and mutual benefit, to ensure that climate action drives economic growth rather than hindering it.
Strategic Vision
The session outlined a clear long-term vision: Indonesia aspires to be a leading global hub for high-integrity carbon markets. By prioritizing the Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) sector as the backbone of its strategy, Indonesia is leveraging its vast natural resources to deliver real climate solutions while creating green jobs and sustainable livelihoods.
Conclusion
The opening of the Indonesia Pavilion marks a new chapter in climate action. With a robust regulatory framework, ambitious absolute targets, and a ready-to-trade carbon marketplace, Indonesia is translating its climate pledges into tangible economic and environmental outcomes. The message to the world is clear: Indonesia is ready to collaborate, trade, and lead in the global fight against climate change.
