About

A. Background

As the world seeks integrated solutions for climate mitigation, adaptation, and food security, blue food systems—ranging from fisheries, aquaculture, mangrove and seagrass ecosystems—emerge as critical pathways for both nature-based solutions and high-integrity carbon economy.

Indonesia, as the largest archipelagic nation, has placed ocean-based climate action and blue carbon ecology as strategic pillars in achieving its Enhanced NDC and Net Zero Emission 2060. Youth-led initiatives across Indonesian coasts are pioneering practical innovations—from community-based mangrove rehabilitation, sustainable aquaculture, to digital storytelling of fisherfolk resilience.

This session will highlight the Blue Food Initiative as a youth-driven movement that is evolving into a multi-stakeholder platform, bridging government, academia, civil society, private sector, and indigenous knowledge. The discussion will also explore the linkage between blue food, carbon markets, and global collaboration—including potential alignment with Gold Standard, Verra, and emerging Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRA) for carbon trading.

By connecting Indonesian experiences with Amazonian and Pacific perspectives, the session will emphasize cross-regional learning, showcasing how blue food can support climate resilience, equitable livelihood, and integrity in global carbon governance.
