A. Background

Rising Global Demand for Nickel as a Critical Mineral
Global demand for critical minerals particularly nickel from Indonesia continues to rise as the transition toward renewable energy technologies, especially Electric Vehicles (EVs), accelerates. Nickel serves as a key materials in lithium-ion battery manufacturing and is increasingly essential as the world strives to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. With approximately 42% of the world’s total nickel reserves, Indonesia holds a pivotal position in supporting the resilience and sustainability of this strategic mineral supply chain.
Indonesia’s Downstream Development and Battery Ecosystem
Today, Indonesia is not only a major supplier of raw materials but is also developing a downstream ecosystem that covers an integrated lithium ion battery industrial chain—from nickel mining, hydrometallurgical smelters, refining, to manufacturing of ternary precursors. Through this downstream development, Indonesia aims to increase domestic economic value while strengthening its position as a global key player in Electric Vehicle industry ecosystem.
Industry Commitment to Sustainable Transformation
At the Indonesia Pavilion of COP30, public and private sectors showcases stronger and more ambitious climate action that is urgently required to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. Key players in Indonesia’s lithium ion battery industrial chain are committed to support the implementation of sustainable development through continuous technology innovation.
Technology Enabling Efficiency and Decarbonization
Through technological advancement, nickel miner and processing companies are increasingly shifting toward cleaner and more efficient production systems with bigger mission; reducing carbon emission footprint and minimize greenhouse gas (GHG) emission.
Advancing Net Zero Emission and a Competitive Green Economy
By aligning industrial technology innovations with global Net Zero Emissions (NZE) ambitions, Indonesia is charting a new path for sustainable growth, where economic competitiveness and environmental responsibility advance hand in hand. Through strategic downstream investments and green innovation, Indonesia is shaping the future of the global electric vehicle ecosystem while affirming its leadership in the transition toward a low-carbon and sustainable world.

B. Objective and Output

To highlight the Ministry’s role in safeguarding environmental integrity through effective regulatory frameworks and policy development. As a regulator, the Ministry ensures that industrial growth and resource
utilization are aligned with sustainability principles.
To highlight PT Vale’s role as a responsible miner in driving sustainable nickel development, showcasing its efforts in ESG leadership and biodiversity protection.
To highlight Harita Nickel’s integrated operations that promote circular practices; waste repurposing, heat recovery, energy efficiency, and advanced HPAL and RKEF technologies.
To highlight Huayou’s technology excellence, demonstrating how its advanced technologies not only enhance operational efficiency but also significantly reduce carbon emissions, showcasing proven
alignment between tech innovation and sustainability.
