A4 – Driving the Renewable Revolution: Unleashing Indonesia Renewable Energy Ambition

About

A. Background

As the world grapples with the escalating impacts of climate change, the transition to renewable energy has emerged as a critical component of global efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. Renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydropower offer a sustainable alternative. In addition, development of bioenergy as a more environmental friendly fuel is also necessary especially considering the abundant resource that is available in Indonesia. The urgency of transitioning to renewable energy cannot be overstated, as it is essential not only for reducing emissions but also for enhancing energy security, creating jobs, and fostering economic growth.

However, while there has been significant progress in the adoption of renewable energy technologies, the pace of change remains insufficient to meet the ambitious targets set by the Paris Agreement. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), renewable energy capacity must increase by three to four times the current levels by 2030 to stay on track with the 1,5 °C pathway. This requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders, including governments, the private sector, and civil society, to enhance ambition and accelerate the deployment of renewable energy.

In this context, the session on “Enhanced Ambition on Renewable Energy” at the COP29 Indonesia Pavilion aims to address the critical challenges and opportunities associated with scaling up renewable energy that is relevant with the context and situation of Indonesia in terms of geographic character. The session will explore the role of policy frameworks, technological innovations, and international cooperation in driving the renewable energy transition, with a particular focus on the needs and capabilities of developing countries. These countries often faces unique challenges, such as limited financial resources, inadequate infrastructure, and regulatory & policy barriers, which can impede the adoption of renewable energy. Addressing these challenges requires tailored solutions that consider the specific contexts of these nations while leveraging global partnerships and technology transfer. B. Objective

The primary objective of this session is to convene a diverse group of experts, practitioners, and stakeholders to discuss and identify actionable strategies for enhancing ambition on renewable energy. By focusing on policy, innovation, and collaboration, the session aims to generate insights that can inform the development of more effective and inclusive approaches to renewable energy deployment. Additionally, the session seeks to highlight the importance of international cooperation, particularly in supporting developing countries to overcome the barriers they face in transitioning to renewable energy. The outcomes of this discussion will contribute to the broader goals of COP29, reinforcing global commitments to climate action and sustainable development.

C. Target and Audiences

This session is designed for policymakers, energy sector professionals, researchers, and representatives from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) involved in climate action and renewable energy initiatives. It also aims to engage international delegates and stakeholders interested in the progress of renewable energy in emerging markets.

D. Session format

The session will be conducted as a talk show featuring presentations by three experts followed by a moderated discussion. The session will last for 80 minutes, with 60 minutes dedicated to presentations and 20 minutes for the discussion.
