About

A. Background

Tropical forests sit at the heart of the climate and biodiversity agendas. Safeguarding these ecosystems is a global priority, but the effectiveness of joint efforts in environmental stewardship continues to be limited by structural frictions. Capital markets, donor cycles, and corporate reporting typically operate on short time horizons, while ecosystems and communities operate on generational timelines. Institutions may demand complex governance structures that may not map neatly onto customary land rights, local institutions, or social dynamics. Often, long-term capacity building is also limited by lack of adequate transition support for indigenous peoples and subsistence farmers. This panel will discuss the complex local realties of forest stewardship, and new collaborative models to promote sustainable food and commodities production practices and responsible value chains.
