About

A. Background

In recent years, forest fires have risen in global attention as an environmental and economic issue. Fires are considered a threat to sustainable development because of their direct effects on ecosystems, contribution to carbon emissions and impact on biodiversity. Peat fire produce smoke haze which has a negative impact on health, daily life, transportation, education and regional cooperation.

In Indonesia, forest fires occur almost every year especially in dry season. Many researchers stated that almost 99% of forest and land fires in Indonesia are caused by human activities. Local communities are familiar with the use of fires in traditional livelihood activities, such as land and post-harvest vegetation clearing, agriculture preparation, hunting, camping, etc.

The Global Fire Management Hub, established by the FAO, has five key pillars: Knowledge and Data Sharing, Capacity Building, Fire Risk Reduction, Wildfire Resilient Communities, and Policy Support. These pillars are designed to strengthen countries' ability to implement integrated fire management by applying the 5 Rs: Review and Analysis, Risk Reduction, Readiness, Response to Fires, and Recovery as well as reducing the negative impacts of wildfires on people, landscapes, and the global climate.

This talk show will discuss the capacity building -one of the key pillar of Fire Hub- within Indonesia which has established it’s Manggala Agni forest fire brigades since 2002 amid the challenging of reducing GHG as mandated by NDC and Indonesia’s Folu Net Sink 2030 Programme.
